Arsenal 2-2 Boca Juniors - Highlights

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead and face more questions about their defensive frailties ahead of the new season after Boca Juniors battled to a 2-2 draw in the Emirates Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal showed little sign of missing Cesc Fabregas as summer signing Gervinho impressed to set up Robin van Persie for the opening goal on 27 minutes, with Aaron Ramsey doubling the lead at the start of the second half.

However, the Gunners once again hit the self-destruct button at the back as mistakes from Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou were punished when the Argentinian side struck twice in four minutes.

"I understand both the football and the group better, and I now have many friends in this team. So I aim to keep improving and to make a big contribution.

However, he managed just one senior start and four substitute appearances for the team, and has had to ply his trade with other clubs to gain first-team football.

And now with the potential departures of midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Sami Nasri, Wenger is considering going back to Wigan with a bid for the midfielder.

Last night a top Barca source admitted: "Arsenal have let it be known that unless a deal for Cesc is sorted by the end of the month then he will stay in London.

"They said although they never wanted to sell their captain they were prepared to reluctantly accept Cesc's request to come home.

"They've insisted they have been very fair to Cesc and Barcelona and this situation is not healthy for them and has to end.

"They are not prepared to wait much longer and after staying silent throughout the summer, they will issue a public statement to draw a line under this matter at the start of next month.

"We understand there is no way they will sell Cesc for what we offered but the decision rests with our president Sandro Rosell."

Arsenal Sign Joel Campbell From Deporivo Saprissa

He is, however, considered to be an exciting prospect for the future and Arsenal have seen off interest from Italy and Spain in securing his services.

The 19 year old defensive midfielder is one of the younger members of the squad that has travelled to Asia and he knows the games in the Far East present him with a chance to play his way into Arsène Wenger’s plans ahead of the new season.

Frimpong told Arsenal.com : “It’s a big opportunity for me to show what I can do,”.

“I’m here to try and get in the team and show the manager what I can do so hopefully it all goes well.

Wenger : Keeping Samir Nasri Will Prove Arsenal's Ambition

Arsene Wenger has revealed that keeping Samir Nasri will prove Arsenal's ambition.

The French tactician insists that Arsenal needs Nasri more than it needs the money - and that's why selling him is not on Wenger's agenda.

Wenger reiterated when he spoke to reporters in Malaysia : "Samir's situation is clear for me - he stays,".

"I've told you that we are in a position where we can say 'No.' And we will [in the case of Nasri]."

It was put to Wenger that keeping Nasri with no guarantee that he will sign a new contract represents a £20million gamble - the fee his suitors are reportedly prepared to pay.

"You are the same people who reproach me for not spending money and now you reproach me for wanting to spend it!" replied Wenger.

"It is in the interests of the Club," he went on. "Imagine the worst situation - we lose Fabregas and Nasri - you cannot convince people you are ambitious after that.

"And even if you lose Nasri, to find the same quality player, you have to spend again the same amount of money. Because you cannot say that you lose the player and you do not replace him.

“I believe for us it is important that the message we give out - for example you see about Fabregas leaving, Nasri leaving - if you give that message out you cannot pretend you are a big club.

“Because a big club first of all holds onto its big players and gives a message out to all the other big clubs that they just cannot come in and take [players] away from you.

“We worked very hard with these players for years to develop them and now it’s time for us to keep them together.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger have confirmed that the club have signed Gervinho from Lille.

The French tactician also claimed that both Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas will be staying at The Emirates next season during a press conference in Malaysia at the start of the Gunners' pre-season tour.

Ivory Coast striker Gervinho has been in talks with Arsenal for a week after the clubs agreed a fee earlier in the month, though the player may not join up with his new team-mates in South East Asia due to visa issues.

Wenger added that Nasri was "very happy" at Arsenal and would be staying, as would the club's talismanic skipper Cesc Fabregas, despite the player's desire to move to Barcelona.

Theo Walcott Wants Arsenal To Keep Hold Of Stars

Theo Walcott has hinted at frustration with Arsenal's transfer policy.

The England international star attracted an enquiry from Chelsea earlier this summer and concedes he wants to see changes in the Gunners' transfer plans.

Walcott said : "We play great football but we might need a bigger squad,".

"We also need to keep hold of our best players.

"The boss has said that he is going to spend as well and add to the team. That will be crucial.

"I will be very keen to see who comes and goes. As a team last season it was disappointing.

"We need to move that step closer and maybe should have done a lot better in the last stretch.

"There are a lot of teams like Manchester City and Liverpool coming into the frame now. It is not going to be an easy Premier League.

"We need to concentrate on the future and hopefully it is going to be bright for us next season."

Arsenal Table £18 million Bid For Stewart Downing

Arsenal have tabled a massive £18 million bid for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing.

But it's still not enough.

However, Villa owner Randy Lerner is demanding £20 million to sell the former Middlesbrough star.

Lerner rejected £15 million from Liverpool for Downing last week.

Thomas Vermaelen Desperate To Have Injury Free Campaign

Thomas Vermaelen endured an injury-hit 2010/11 campaign, restricting him to just five first-team appearances compared to his debut season in England, when he figured in 45 games and became the rock at the heart of the Arsenal’s back four.

The Belgian centre-half is now determined to make up for lost time when he returns to first team action.

"I am really excited, especially after last year," the 25 year old told the club's official website.

"I want to prove myself again and show the people what I'm able to do.

"Personally, yes, of course I am more determined, I played a lot of games in my first year and I hoped to do well in my second year but unfortunately I had a big injury and I couldn't play a lot so I couldn't show the people a lot.

"I'm determined to go on the pitch this year and fight for it.

"But the most important thing is the team of course and I hope we can work as hard as we can as individuals and make the team as strong as we can."

Samir Nasri Offered New Arsenal Contract

Arsenal have made a new contract offer to Samir Nasri.

The London Evening Standard reported that Nasri refused to sign a five-year contract worth £90,000 a week earlier this year but manager Arsene Wenger is hoping a higher offer will make the midfielder change his mind.

It worked last summer when the Arsenal boss convinced captain Cesc Fabregas to ignore Barcelona's overtures by increasing his weekly pay to £110,000.

Fabregas is still expected to join the Spanish giants before the start of the season but Wenger hopes a similar tactic will encourage Nasri to commit to the club.

He has the option to offer the former Marseille star, who joined Arsenal for £15.8million in 2008, the same £110,000-a-week package, which is nearly double Nasri's current £60,000-a-week deal.

Nasri, who has just one year remaining on his current deal, is wanted by Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Ryo Miyaichi Joins Arsenal For Asia Tour

Arsenal fans will get their first look at Ryo Miyaichi in a Gunners shirt on their Asia preseason tour.

Arsenal have included Japan youngster Miyaichi, who has returned after a successful loan spell in Holland at Feyenoord, in their tour squad.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, though, rejected suggestions the 18-year-old's participation was purely a cunning marketing ploy.

"He is on the plane because he is quality," the Arsenal manager said.

"It is a good opportunity for him to show that he has the talent to play for Arsenal.

"Everybody will be curious to see him play in Asia."

Cesc Fabregas Not Included In Arsenal Preseason Tour

Cesc Fabregas has been left out of Arsenal's squad to the Far East for their preseason tour.

Barcelona remain determined to sign the midfielder, though Arsenal's £40 million valuation is stalling talks.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said: "We will take the strongest possible squad, but Fabregas will not travel because he still has a small muscular problem. He will stay and practice here.

"There is a doubt about [Emmanuel] Eboue who has done his calf."

Marouane Chamakh Wants To Prove Himself At Arsenal

Marouane Chamakh is determined to stay and prove himself at Arsenal.

The striker endured an inconsistent first season at the Gunners.

French giants PSG are chasing the Chamakh this summer, but French sources say the Morocco international is only thinking of a future with the Gunners.

Chamakh failed to score a Premier League goal after November last season.

The Gunners boss was commentating for French TV and raved about Doyle’s performance - and is now preparing to offer him the chance to become part of a new Arsenal era nearly 18 months later.
